This week, Where to Eat columnist emeritus Pete Wells has an ode to the patty melt that will send you running to one of the six New York City restaurant versions he spotlights, or the nearest diner. Patty melts, after all, have long been the bread and butter (and caramelized onions) of the old-school diner, institutions that are in increasingly short supply in New York, but to quote “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” are “not dead yet.”I grew up with Waffle House as my go-to diner and, for the record, I like my double hash browns smothered. Once I moved to New York, I nursed many a hangover at Tina’s Place in Bushwick, around for more than 80 years. Later I became fascinated with diners for millennials, by millennials like Golden Diner and Baby Blues Luncheonette, but I always come home to the unfussy and affordable comfort of the old school.

CNN —So you want to live like you’re from the Middle Ages? Swarthout is the researcher behind the popular art history-inspired social media account Weird Medieval Guys, which has attracted nearly 700,000 followers on X, formerly Twitter, since she began posting with the handle @WeirdMedieval in April 2022. Swarthout is not a historian, but a recently graduated statistician who took art history during undergrad. If you’ve seen “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” the 1975 movie spoof of all things Arthurian and many things not, you know the coconuts I mean. And if you’re enough of a Python fan to have also seen “Spamalot,” the 2005 Broadway musical “lovingly ripped off” from the film, you’ve probably memorized the whole bit. That’s the one in which Arthur’s trusted patsy, Patsy, slaps coconut halves together so the deluded king can pretend he has a horse. Among many others, so are a troupe of self-flagellating monks, a cart of corpses, a vulgar French taunter and a Trojan rabbit. This one, directed and choreographed by Josh Rhodes, gives the “ni”-sayers what they want.

They have ornate thousand-year-old cathedrals, not the Brand X cathedrals you see in the States. They have ominous, eye-popping castles where kings were brutally murdered—sometimes by their own wives. They have steak-and-kidney pies and cream teas and the Tower of London and Monty Python. But now they want Halloween. English friends say that Halloween has “really taken off” in the U.K. since I last visited in 2017.

One of the most ominous subtexts of “George Harrison: The Reluctant Beatle,” it turns out, is the sense of a man grown old before his time. Hospitalized for six weeks at the age of 13 with nephritis, a martyr to swollen tonsils and on-tour exhaustion, he spent much of his early life being ill.

In a scene in the 1975 movie “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” King Arthur roams around the English countryside attempting to gather knights for the Round Table. When he declares, “I am your king!” to a deeply unimpressed peasant, her response is both absurd and blindingly obvious. As long as there has been a monarch in this country — for more than a 1,000 years — there have been questions about the legitimacy of the monarchy. “One of the reasons that the monarchy persists is that we don’t often have serious conversations about why we have a monarchy,” said Alastair Bellany, an English-born historian at Rutgers University specializing in 16th- and 17th-century Britain. I think a serious country has to look in the mirror.

Elon Musk joked that his Twitter business model takes inspiration from Monty Python. Monty Python member Eric Idle is among the prominent figures to criticize Musk's plan for a paid service. The most discussed is his decision to charge verified users to keep their symbolic blue ticks, which signal they are who they say they are. Amusingly, one prominent figure to criticize Musk's plans to charge users was Monty Python member Eric Idle. Idle, who does not appear in the sketch Musk shared, tweeted Monday to say he'd likely leave Twitter if he had to pay.
Ted Cruz reminisced about the "gorgeous woman in a halter top" seated behind him at Yankee Stadium. He said on his podcast he reminded himself to avoid getting caught on camera looking at the woman. Cruz said a friend sitting beside him noted how "'to use the Monty Python phrase, 'She has great tracts of land.'" "I have to admit, the whole damn game, I'm like, 'I'm looking forward. Cruz was at Yankee Stadium to cheer on the Houston Astros, who advanced to the World Series.
CNN —The phrase “cancel culture” has become a ubiquitous catchall that celebrities may cling to after they make a controversial or offensive statement. But Graham Norton doesn’t think that’s the correct description for what really happens when fans criticize “canceled” people. Speaking to interviewer Mariella Frostrup, Norton decried the concept of “canceling” anyone who still has a sizable platform from which to speak. “You read a lot of articles in papers by people complaining about ‘cancel culture,’” he told Frostrup. I’m reading your name in a newspaper, or you’re doing an interview about how terrible it is to be canceled.”“I think [‘cancel culture’] is the wrong word,” he continued.
